WDB Programs Featured at Department Roundtable
The Workforce Development Bureau was
featured prominently on an Employment and Training Services Panel sponsored by the
Information and Assistance unit of the Employment and Human Service Department
(EHSD). Maureen Nelson, Assistant Administrator, America’s Job Center
of California (AJCC) touched on WDB’s regional projects, the Opportunity Act
and the services offered in the career centers. Gina Del Carlo, Project
Director of Youth Program and Policy, presented on efforts to reconnect
out-of-school youth to training and employment, supports for in-school youth and
the summer jobs program (in partnership with the East Bay Parks District). Gina
also showed a video on the Earn’n’Learn model, demonstrating the value of
connecting youth to the workplace early – giving them the opportunity to find
mentors, gain skills and acquire the pride that comes with earning a paycheck.
Over 32 people attended the presentation, contributing to a lively Q&A
session that was heavy on queries about the youth program.
Other presenters were Leona
Patterson, Project Director of Senior Community Services Employment
Program, Aging & Adult Services and Tiffany Fisher, Rehabilitation
Counselor, Department of Rehabilitation. Nhang Luong, Program Supervisor of
Information and Assistance, served as moderator. The Professional Exchange Roundtables
are held quarterly and give EHSD employees a chance to learn about the programs
and services of their peers. According to the post-event evaluations, 96% of participants
said they agreed or strongly agreed that the information they gleaned would be
useful in their work.
